‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’
My earliest memory of being asked that question as a child, I remember the overwhelming sense of control at even such a delicate age. I didn’t know the answer then, but at least I knew it was my decision. How amazing knowing in my little world full of rules and discipline that one day I would have the power to do anything I wanted. However, with great power comes great responsibility and little did I know just how complex a process it would be to find out my answer to that question.
The real question is…
Does anyone ever really know the answer?
What exactly do we mean by ‘grow up’?
What significant milestones do we have to achieve to class ourselves as grown up enough to know what we want to be? Married? Kids? Mortgage? All of the above? Most people usually gage it by thinking about what career path they take into adulthood. Not everyone knows what they want to do though do they? Here’s some food for thought to help you decide for yourself.
You could maybe start by going back in time
As far back as you can remember and think about anything you loved doing as a child. What were you passionate about? What made you happy? If those feelings still linger as the years have you passed then you know that it’s not just a novelty it’s a part of who you are!
What skills are your best assets?
I am a firm believer that everyone is good at something, so what might work for someone else may not work for you but that’s okay! We weren’t all born to become the same product and it would be a pretty boring place to live if we were! So yes, everyone has something they excel in more than others but the wide variation in available vocations is what makes each individual, just that – individual. Don’t forget how special you really are!!!
Now it’s time for you to think about what you need to do to get what you want.
Make a list of every single route you can take, no matter how out there it might sound. Just know that there are endless possibilities and ways around to get to where you want to be. It’s not always as simple as A to B. Sometimes you gotta go through the whole alphabet to make it to B, know what I mean? It’s a trial and error situation but with a lot of thought, planning, time and hard work, you really can reach for the stars and maybe even touch them.
Time to put your plans into practice and turn those hopes and dreams of yours into goals and success.
Even though I might not have known what I wanted to be when I grew up,
I know now that I am, least of all, happy and that’s exactly what I want.
